Omaha Hi-Lo: General Outline

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complicated but popular poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure variation, has grown in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better begins just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A sequence of betting follows where gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. One more sequence of wagering happens. After all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of wagering ensues and then the river card is revealed. The entrants will need to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where many entrants can get baffled. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player must use precisely 3 cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the best hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical approach in almost every poker game.

A low hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that could be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no low hand available, the high hand wins the entire pot.

It may seem difficult at first, following a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the base nuances of the game with ease. Since you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are being used at once, Omaha 8 or better provides an overwhelming array of betting options and seeing that you have several individuals shooting for the high hand, and several trying for the low. If you enjoy a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha/8.
