Gus Hansen had a marvelous year on the WPT where he was the only participant to achieve closing game in 3 of the tournaments. Gus Hansen has appeared on High Stakes Poker on GSN where he paid $400, 000 to play. You might recall one of the largest pots in high stakes poker recorded history competing against Daniel Negreanu. He secured a large pot with quads against Daniel’s full house. Gus has made many tv poker appearances and is considered to be one of the greatest gamblers in the world. While competing in web poker, a different side of Hansen has appeared. Gus regularly plays in the 200/400 NL maximum buy-in of Forty Thousand dollars. Gus generally buys in for the min of Sixteen Thousand dollars and plays very weak. He sits there waiting for a decent hand and then goes all in. I believe Gus is a great poker player but certainly not even close to the regular players at 200/400NL. Unless Gus is bankrupt, he has absolutely no reason to play at the table with the minimum buy-in.
Playing for the minimum takes almost all of the skill out of deep stack poker. Gus is assumed to be one of the greatest players in the world but he can’t buy-in for the full amount. I think tv can skew our perception of the real world every now and then. The greatest poker players anywhere in the world might just be guys you have never heard of. Gus can be seen wagering on online poker on Full Tilt. He generally plays in high stakes omaha/8 and hold’em. Gus has shown himself as a tournament player. Can he back up his talents in money games?
