Phil Ivey has been referred to as the number one poker contender on the planet by many of the top-ranked professionals. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and moved to New Jersey before his first birthday. His papa taught him penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was hooked on poker and wanted to pickup every little thing he could about poker. He routinely told his grandparents that he was planning on being a professional poker player. Phil did not permit the detrimental comments from other people kill his goal of becoming one of the strongest poker competitors in the world.
Phil began playing seriously after acquiring a false ID by the name of Jerome. He honed his game at the poker rooms of Atlantic City. The initial few years for Phil were a learning period and coming away with a win wasn’t a common outcome at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 WSOP when he made two final tables and won his 1st WSOP bracelet, in a two dollar, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the closing table he defeated quite a few of the well known professionals including but not limited to "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He decided to take his game to the next level and moved out west to Las Vegas. He continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players on the planet. Phil credits his success to hard work and an immeasurable passion for the game of poker. Phil says that he’s picking up skills every single day and is incredibly abashed about his accomplishments. He knows he makes mistakes in each game of poker and always strives to improve.
Although Ivey has won some large tournaments, he likes winning money games on a regular basis.
