Gus Hansen enjoyed a marvelous year on the WPT where he was the only player to make it to the last poker table in three of the tournaments. Gus Hansen has appeared on High Stakes Poker on The Game Show Network where he bought into the game for $400, 000. You might remember one of the largest pots in big stakes poker recorded history competing against Daniel Negreanu. He raked in a large pot with quads against Daniel’s full house. Hansen has made many tv poker appearances and is considered to be one of the strongest bettors anywhere in the world. While playing web poker, a different side of Hansen has appeared. Gus frequently competes in the 200/400 No Limit maximum buy-in of $40, 000. Hansen generally buys-in for the min of Sixteen Thousand dollars and gambles very poorly. He waits for a decent hand and then pushes all in. I know Gus is an amazing poker player but not even close to the regular players at 200/400NL. Unless he is bankrupt, he has absolutely no reason to sit at the game with the min buy in.
Buying in for the minimum takes most of the ability out of big stack poker. Hansen is supposed to be 1 of the best poker players anywhere in the world but he cannot buy in for the full dollar value. I believe tv can skew our perception of the real world every now and then. The greatest players in the world could be players you have won’t have heard about. Gus can be seen playing online poker on Full Tilt. He commonly plays in high stakes Omaha and hold’em. Gus has shown himself as a tournament player. Can he back up his skills in money rounds?
