Omaha Hi-Lo: Basic Outline

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complex but popular poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible variation, has expanded in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha/8 starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A round of wagering ensues where gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. A further round of wagering happens. After all the players have in turn called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of betting ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers will have to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where some entrants often get confused. Unlike Hold’em, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player must use precisely three cards from the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical approach in nearly all poker games.

The lower hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the higher hand wins the whole pot.

While it seems complex at the start, after a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the basic subtleties of the game simply enough. Since you have players betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better offers an exciting assortment of wagering choices and seeing that you have numerous individuals trying for the high, as well as a few trying for the low. If you enjoy a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is worth your time to participate in Omaha/8.
