Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complicated but favored poker games. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant game, has expanded in acceptance so amazingly.
Omaha 8 or better starts just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A round of wagering follows where players can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. A further sequence of betting happens. Once all the players have either called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of betting follows and then the river card is revealed. The players will have to put together the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where many players get confused. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player must utilize precisely 3 cards on the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the best hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same concept in almost all poker games.
A lower hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the higher hand wins the whole pot.
While it seems complex at first, after a couple of hands you will be agile enough to get the fundamental nuances of play with ease. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha/8 provides an amazing range of betting options and because you have numerous individuals trying for the high, along with many shooting for the low. If you like a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
