Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he liked playing different card games when he was young. He found himself getting really aggressive in these particular card games while competing against his father. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a little bit and headed to New York City to compete in some serious chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s first 2 years were rough as he played many hours and lose a majority of the time. He made some additional money by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he possibly could improve his game by balancing his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to get more rest and focus more on the game.
The actual improvement in his game happened when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable players would frequently play against one another. Howard was able to access several of the greatest players in chess. Howard also helped his sister Annie Duke learn poker. Annie Duke was a superb student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct decision. Howard told Annie to head out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP competition. Annie Duke is one of the greatest women players the poker world ever. He moved to Las Vegas in 1993 and played cash games for the subsequent decade. When the WPT gained popularity, he made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
